A Louisiana Justice of the Peace (JP) is an elected official who handles minor civil matters and serves as a judicial officer at the local level. Their primary role is preside over small claims cases and other disputes involving amounts of $5000 or less as well as eviction cases.
A few examples of some of the matters a Justice of the Peace can assist with:
Evictions
Small Claims cases (think Judge Judy, for matters up to $5000)
Judgment of Title for movables (vehicles, trailers, etc.) and boats
Garnishments
Marriages
If you are a registered voter in St. Landry Parish:
Click on Find my JP or Constable button.
Fill out the voter search form and hit submit.
Click on My Elected Officials. It will give you the names and phone number of the officials in your district. You must scroll down to find your JP or Constable.
